Obituary for Thomas John Regan, Jr.
Thomas John Regan, Jr., 90, of Acton, MA died on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, after a brief illness.
Born in Syracuse, NY, he was the son of Thomas J. Regan, Sr. and Lula (Brennan) Regan. He was married to Ruth Else Regan for 60 years.
Mr. Regan was born and grew up in Syracuse, NY. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois. He was introduced to his wife Ruth through mutual friends in Buffalo, NY and soon after began a family. Mr. Regan’s work took the family to New Orleans, Louisiana, St. Louis, Missouri and the Boston area in 1967. They settled in Acton, where Mr. Regan resided until his death.
Mr. Regan had a long and successful career as a Structural Engineer with the engineering firm of Sverdrup and Parcel, where he became a valued bridge and tunnel expert. His tunneling projects including the MBTA Red Line expansion; Design Project Manager for the Ted Williams Tunnel; consultant to the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority for the Sumner and Callahan Tunnels; and Project Director for the St. Louis Light Rail System, along with many other projects. After retiring, he acted as a consultant to the Lowell, Massachusetts Rapid Transit Authority.
Mr. Regan also volunteered his time as a member of a number of municipal and community boards including the town of Acton’s Permanent Building Committee; the School Building Committee; consulting for church building projects as well as a long-time volunteer for Meals-On-Wheels.
He enjoyed annual summer camping trips, skiing, hiking, and traveling with his family. He especially enjoyed time spent planning and traveling worldwide with his wife, including trips to Europe, Central and South America, China, Malaysia, Australia, Thailand and Singapore.
Mr. Regan was predeceased his wife Ruth and his son, Donald Thomas Regan. He is survived by his daughter Cynthia Greiman and husband, William, of Helena, Montana; daughter Deborah Augliere and husband, Reed, of Littleton; daughter-in-law Cynthia Regan of Boxborough, and 5 grandchildren: Lillie Greiman, Tyson, Michele and Caroline Augliere, and Jae Regan.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 11 at 11:00am at Church of the Good Shepherd in Acton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Acton Council on Aging, Minuteman Senior Services, or the Acton Memorial Library.
