Obituary for Albert Burke
MAYNARD - Albert D. Burke, 75, a businessman and former Maynard Selectman, died Saturday, November 30, 2013 after an illness the Emerson Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Geraldine "Jeri" Burke.
Born in Boston and raised in Brookline, he was one of seven sons of the late Joseph W. and Katherine B. (Donnelly) Burke. He graduated in 1955 from St Mary of the Assumption High School Brookline, MA. He enlisted in the US Army in 1956 and was stationed at the 2nd General Hospital Landstuhl, Germany until 1958. He drove ambulances, was a chaplain’s assistant and during his off-duty time instructed his commanding officers in the fine art of golf. He and his wife, Jeri, were married May 6, 1962 and settled in Maynard to raise their family. A graduate of Babson College with a degree in business management, Mr. Burke was employed as a micrographics and records storage manager at the former Digital Equipment Corporation from 1971 to 1991, then owned and operated Burke Auto Supply from 1992-2006. After his retirement he continued to work part time in security for Regis College.
Active in the community, Mr. Burke was elected Selectman in 1980 and served in the position until1983, and was a key contributor in planning the town ceremonies for commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Digitals Corporate Headquarters in Maynard and its President Mr. Kenneth Olsen. He was a member of the Maynard Lode of Elks #1568 and the Knights of Columbus in Brookline. An avid golfer, he was a semi-pro at the Wayland and Maynard Country Clubs, and at one time operated a pro shop at Stowaway Country Club in Stow, MA. He especially enjoyed gardening and spent his leisure time working in both his vegetable and flower gardens. He was a loyal member of Red Sox nation, and an unwavering sports fan of the Patriots, Bruins and Celtics along with tailgating at BC Alumni Stadium on many a fall weekend. During their spare time, Al and Jeri were beach goers and spent many weekends in Salisbury and Hampton beach.
He is survived and will be sadly missed by his sons, Michael D. Burke of Maynard, MA; David Johnson and wife Linda of Tampa, FL; three grandchildren, Aaron M. Burke of Gardner, Ryan Johnson of Boston, MA and Kelly Piotrowski and husband Kevin of Hampton NH. His brothers, Joe Burke of Falmouth MA, Jack Burke of Naples FL, Ron Burke of W. Roxbury MA, Kenneth Burke of Norwood MA, and Jim Burke of Boston MA; and many nieces, nephews, their families and his life-long friends of the Mill Gang. He was the brother of the late Paul Burke of Taunton MA, formerly of Bellingham MA.
Graveside services will be held in Glenwood Cemetery, Maynard, in the spring. Date and time will be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in his name to the Center for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court St, Boston, MA 02108, also on-line at http://www.nechv.org.
